Overview

Whirlpool Connected Ovens are connected appliances that save energy and allow remote capabilities from a mobile device, and now integrated with Yummly.

My Role

I was responsible for designing the user interface on the Whirlpool app that safely controls the oven, creating interactive prototypes, ensuring the experience was consistent across other Whirlpool connected products, overseeing and approving international software development of UI/UX visuals, ensuring the technical and interactive solution supported the experience requirements, and providing design recommendations based on experience audit results. Available to purchase on the market at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Bekkins, and Menard’s.

To acknowledge and celebrate the cross-functional teams that I worked with: controlling the range operates within the Whirlpool app and was completed in wonderful collaboration with the incredibly hard work and passion of hundreds of engineers, developers, and teams of designers of every concentration. My everyday work with this project couldn't have been done without the knowledge transfers of the on-appliance designers Megan Clayton and her team, members of my team Melanie Riley, Kevin Maenle, Brennan Martin, Shantanu Dhond and his team in Pune, India, and my hilarious manager, Richard Hughes.

Whirlpool acquired Yummly…

Whirlpool acquired Silicon Valley-based Yummly in May 2017. Yummly is your smart cooking sidekick, offering personalized guidance every step of the way. From recipe recommendations just for you, to handy tools and helpful videos, Yummly has everything you need to improve life in the kitchen.

We all know that two families are the same. Yummly recognizes this and provides everything families need to improve life in the kitchen. Tell Yummly diets, allergies, tastes and flavor preferences and it will only serve up recipes that match. Then further narrow down the search of its over two million recipes by ingredient, prep time, course, cuisine, occasion, nutrition and more.

…And then beamed recipes from the app to your oven. (say what?)

With Yummly 2.0, recipes will connect to smart Whirlpool ovens to make cooking faster, easier and better. Yummly will identify recipes that work with connected appliances, take the recipe from the app and send the cooking instructions straight to the Whirlpool® range or microwave. The appliance will follow the recipe and users will be able to follow along with the guided cooking process via the Yummly app with step by step recipes, including video tutorials, timers and more handy tools to make cooking a breeze.* Yummly 2.0 will help users through every step to take the guesswork out of cooking.

With ingredient recognition, yummly's app has been reengineered with computer vision smarts that'll come in handy when you've got a half-stocked refrigerator and no idea what to eat. Use your smartphone's camera to scan all the items in the coolbox and its computer vision chops will divine a recipe for you.

*Appliance must be set to remote enable. Wifi & app required. Features subject to change. For details and privacy statement, visit whirlpool.com/connect.

Works with Nest, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home

Integrating your Nest Learning Thermostat™ with the Whirlpool® mobile app takes advantage of intuitive features that can increase efficiencies and help you save energy. Be alerted when your oven is left on and you're not home so you can remotely turn it off. Nest can automatically tell your dishwasher to start when you’ve left, while your washer keeps your clothes fresh until you return. When you’re home, your washer, dryer and dishwasher can all run in Quiet Mode so you’re not bothered by noise. And all appliances including your refrigerator, can shift energy use to less expensive times. Functionality varies by appliance.
